heitor villa-lobos
today i was browsing at the music store and picked up some compositions by heitor villa-lobos. yes, tarantino fans, i know what you're thinking: "as in ESMERELDA villa-lobos???" well that's what caught my eye in the first place. anyhow here's one of his compositions, impressoes seresteiras.

i. absolutely. LOVE acoustic jam sessions. la blogotheque is actually my favorite (noah and the whale, beirut, etc.), but spin magazine put together a pretty decent video montage of 2009's best 13 jam sessions. phoenix's 1901 is on here as well. check 'em out!!! aaaaaaand if you get a chance, check out la blogotheque: random jam seshes (slang synthesis happening before your very eyes!!!) on the streets of paris, soooooo awesome!!

More Adventurous (under the blacklight)
I, Bunbury, have finally done it. I've applied for study abroad. Here's the plan:
Lebanon over the summer, take intensive Arabic and a politics of the Middle East course.
Find an au pair job in Paris.
Continue studying in Paris over the fall, living with my au pair family and studying French and Political Science.
I'm going to sell my car to buy all my plane tickets and a sweet bike, and I'll be applying for as many scholarships and travel grants as I can find. This has been my dream since the moment I got to college, and I won't put off planning it any longer just because of the cost. If I put energy into it, I can go practically for free. Alicat has been so great encouraging me to quit dragging my feet on this, and she's so glad now that I've started planning it. Six months abroad. Six months abroad...... Six. Months. Abroad.

wow..... our house looks like an entirely new place! let me explain.
a couple months ago i rented a house near campus with my dear steve zissou. the place has slowly been coming together, and i mean slowly; like, it-took-a-month-and-a-half-to-get-a-couch slowly. walls were bare, still echoes, a little mausoleum-esque you know? well this bunbury celebrated her birthday the other day and with her birthday money bought frames for all her posters and paintings and from a friend received a clay lizard and red clay celestial sun to mount on the wall. not to mention the two gorgeous bouquets from friends and the *DRUM ROLL* tiled coffee table i'm making. i got a bunch of handpainted tiles at a mexican tile workshop downtown - 89 cents each, hells yeah - and this morning, after two nights of.... celebrating, i got out of bed at an unheard-of (for me anyway) six in the morning and decided to put my birthday checks to a creative use for once. adhered all my tiles to the wooden base and it's drying now, ready to be grouted and sealed tomorrow!

quick recap.
i'd like to talk about how bad i feel that i haven't posted anything for a while, but in all honesty i'd completely forgotten this blog until a couple of days ago. i guess nothing had struck me as interesting enough to post, seeings how i'm trying to keep from being all journal-y and girlish. but in the interest of convincing myself that i've done something with my life within the last six months, i'll list some developments here:
1. i got a new apartment, woo-hoo! living with schoolmates. i'm actually going to be paying real bills, kinda freaked out by the concept of having money worries hang over my head in addition to school stresses.
2. been working as a server for the summer at a casual italian restaurant. it was exciting at first to take home $100 a night, but then it became clear after a while that i was trading in my pride. here's me, a bright, diverse college student with lots of goals for the next year and the far-off future, and i'm picking up people's dishes and asking, "would you like soup or salad?" it's hard to know that the people i serve have no idea how intelligent and opinionated i am, or that i have this job to get my degree and not just to work.... but that's part of a job i suppose.
3. been looking for a car. can i afford this? not exactly. do i need it? ABSOLUTELY. my oldie goldie is falling apart, literally.
4. almost through my reading list! finished mcewan (A+), read faulkner (Z-), working on anna karenina and some d.h. lawrence (loves it), got through vonnegut (interesting ideas, but hated the simplicity).
5. had a brief psuedo-fling with another server.... like almost non-existent actually. he moved to england recently, and i think it's for the absolute best. we were at different chapters even if in the same book, and i have this unfortunate problem where i don't fall for anyone, like at all, so that wouldn't really have worked out in his favor.
i had hoped to do some really cool stuff like read the paper every day, make a stained glass coffee table, write this essay i've had in mind for a while and send it off just for kicks, catch up on movies (you have no idea how many times in my life i've heard the exclamation "you've NEVER seen [insert must-see movie]?!?!?!"]...... damn, i really didn't do anything with my life!! crap.
i heard somewhere that people lie to themselves the most before they fall asleep: i'll change for the better, we'll work on it together, i'll quit eventually, etc... maybe so they'll stop worrying about it and be able to rest with a sort of fake self-assurance. but this one is saying, right here and now, with no sleep or fake promises in sight, that she won't keep wasting her time!! keeping it centered and full of purpose, or i'm bound to lose both my center and purpose.

How to Make a Glowstick
Instructions
Things You’ll Need:
2 liters of distilled water
50 milliliters of hydrogen peroxide
.2 grams of luminol
4 grams of sodium carbonate
.5 gram of ammonium carbonate
.4 gram of copper sulfate pentahydrate
Protective eyewear
Step 1:Buy the necessary supplies. Luminol is the stuff that makes blood glow and can be found at a scientific store, on the Internet or in a kid's spy kit. Sodium carbonate, ammonium carbonate, and copper sulfate pentahydrate are white powders and can be found at a science store.
Step 2:Combine hydrogen peroxide and 1 liter of water. Use a large mixing bowl. Do not use a metal bowl. Choose a ceramic bowl like a bread making bowl.
Step 3:Mix luminol, sodium carbonate, copper sulfate, ammonium carbonate and a liter of water in a second bowl. Use an equally large nonmetal bowl to eliminate spillage when mixing.
Step 4:Find several sealable clear containers, plastic test tubes or small plastic shampoo bottles. Clean the containers and dry thoroughly. Place the containers on the counter on top of newspaper for spillage. Set the correct lid next to the containers for a quick seal when the ingredients are mixed.
Step 5:Pour equal amounts of the solution in Step 1 with equal amounts of solution from Step 2 in each container and close the bottles. Watch as the chemical compound creates a colorful glow.
